Moderator Theresa Hwang set the stage by highlighting the importance of gender equality, its effect on our lives – and the challenges to achieving it. She cited a report by Equal Measure 2030, which predicts that at the current rate, global gender equality will not be achieved until 2108. Therefore, there is an urgent need to address this issue now.
Jennifer Yu Cheng spoke on the importance of empowering women at an early age, particularly in STEM fields. She outlined a strategic four-phase approach to develop a sustainable talent pipeline: inspire teens, equip them with necessary tools, motivate them through awards, and foster long-term industry connections via a digital platform. Her initiative emphasises collective impact and involves a broad network of stakeholders, including corporates, schools, and NGOs, to support and validate students’ achievements and build a foundation for future women leaders.
Xiaojing Wang discussed her company’s innovative "AI Do" initiative, which facilitates digital employment for women in under-served areas, thereby fostering economic empowerment and community development. This initiative has successfully established digital employment centres and has significantly impacted local economies by creating jobs and stimulating economic growth. Wang emphasised the importance of aligning corporate social responsibility with business vision and mission, focusing on inclusion and equal opportunities, which she sees as critical to sustainable business practices and social impact.
Victoria Vrana shared insights on the nature of women in philanthropy, noting that women are predominant in giving circles and more likely to donate to causes supporting other women and girls, despite these causes receiving less than 2% of total donations. She highlighted the digital engagement trends among female donors and underscored the importance of targeted fundraising strategies to effectively engage women. Vrana emphasised the value of collaboration and support networks among women leaders, sharing her personal initiative to create a network for women CEOs working in social change.
Shagun Sabarwal addressed the systemic changes required to tackle gender inequality. She highlighted the importance of contextual solutions in gender equality efforts, discussing how Co-Impact has partnered with a non-profit organisation to integrate gender-focused curricula within public education systems, thereby aiming to shift societal attitudes from an early age. Sabarwal emphasised the crucial role of women in leadership and the need for intentional support and representation in power structures to foster societal change.
